5182 aluminum sheet is a high-magnesium alloy from the 5000 series (Al-Mg system), engineered for applications that demand a balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and formability. With a magnesium content of approximately 4–5%, this alloy stands out as one of the strongest non-heat-treatable aluminum materials, gaining its mechanical properties primarily through strain hardening rather than heat treatment.
Compared to conventional aluminum alloys, 5182 aluminum alloyoffers a superior strength-to-weight ratio, making it a preferred solution for industries focused on lightweight design and structural efficiency. Its excellent welding performance and resistance to harsh environments further enhance its versatility across multiple sectors.
Among 5000 series alloys, alloy 5182 delivers higher strength than many standard grades such as 5052, especially in work-hardened tempers. This makes it suitable for structural components requiring durability without heat treatment.
The elevated magnesium content provides strong resistance to moisture, salt spray, and marine atmospheres. This ensures long-term performance in demanding environments such as coastal and industrial settings.
In the annealed (O) condition, 5182 aluminum sheet maintains high plasticity, allowing it to perform exceptionally well in deep drawing, stamping, and complex forming processes without cracking.
This alloy is compatible with common welding techniques, including TIG, MIG, and resistance welding. It maintains joint integrity and mechanical strength after welding, which is critical for large structural assemblies.
With a density of approximately 2.68 g/cm³, 5182 aluminum alloy supports lightweight engineering goals while maintaining structural strength, making it ideal for transportation and mobile equipment applications.

Thanks to its well-balanced properties, 5182 aluminum sheet is widely used in industries that require both strength and formability:
Used extensively in vehicle body panels such as doors, hoods, fenders, inner panels, and wheel housings. The alloy contributes significantly to vehicle weight reduction while maintaining safety and performance standards.
A key material for beverage can ends and pull tabs, where strength, formability, and corrosion resistance are essential for mass production and product reliability.
Suitable for hull structures, decks, and other marine components due to its resistance to seawater corrosion and good weldability.
Widely used in fuel tanks, oil tankers, and chemical containers. The 5182 H111 temper is particularly developed for tanker body structures, offering enhanced performance in high-load conditions.
Applied in curtain walls, structural panels, refrigeration equipment, and various industrial components where durability and corrosion resistance are required.
5182 aluminum sheet combines high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and reliable weldability into one versatile material. It is especially valuable in applications such as automotive lightweighting, can-end manufacturing, and marine engineering, where performance and efficiency must go hand in hand.
As one of the most important alloys in the 5000 series, 5182 aluminum alloy continues to be a forward-looking material choice for modern manufacturing and engineering solutions.
